Nie będzie zaskoczeniem, że zdecydowanym liderem tegorocznego wyścigu o nagrodę dla najlepszej produkcji telewizyjnej została Gra o tron z dwudziestoma dwoma nominacjami do Emmy. Tuż za znakomitym serialem HBO uplasowały się ex aequo program rozrywkowy Saturday Night Live (NBC) oraz futurystyczny serial Westworld (HBO) – oba z szansą na dwadzieścia jeden statuetek. Oprócz tego z uznaniem organizacji przyznających nagrodę Emmy – Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, National Academy Arts & Sciences i International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – spotkała się Opowieść podręcznej, przedstawiająca apokaliptyczną wizję świata, w której kobiety sprowadzone są do roli klaczy rozpłodowych bez prawa głosu, a wszystko podszyte rzekomą wolą boską. Doceniono również rozmach Korony i kultową już produkcję science-fiction z genialnymi rolami dziecięcymi, czyli Stranger Things, a także historię morderstwa legendarnego projektanta (Zabójstwo Versace: American Crime Story).
Zaskakuje natomiast obecność w zestawieniu najlepszych seriali komediowych Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix) i wyjątkowo mało szans na statuetkę dla Ozark (Netflix), z którego nominację otrzymał jedynie odtwórca głównej roli Jason Bateman (w pełni zasłużenie).
W tym roku największą ilość nominacji do nagrody Emmy otrzymały produkcje platformy Netflix (112), tuż za nią znajduje się HBO (108).
